Dr. Victor R. de la Rosa

Research and Operational Manager

Victor R. de la Rosa studied Chemistry at the University of Valladolid (UVa; Spain) and Ghent University (UGent; Belgium), where he spent a year within the Erasmus programme. Upon graduating in 2010, he returned to Ghent to conduct a PhD on poly(2-oxazoline)s and supramolecular chemistry under the supervision of Prof. Richard Hoogenboom.

In 2015, he was awarded an IWT post-doctoral grant to develop scalable processes for the production of poly(2-oxazoline)s, with a special focus on biomedical applications. He is co-inventor in several patents and has co-authored more than 15 scientific publications in the poly(2-oxazoline)s field. Victor currently coordinates the production and research activities at the ULTROXA Team.

ULTROXA®  team An Van Den Bulcke

Dr. An Van Den Bulcke

Business Developer

An Van Den Bulcke holds a Ph.D in Chemistry (Polymer Synthesis) and has an industrial career in product development and R&D management. In 2011 she started as Business Developer at ChemTech, the Chemistry Business and Valorisation cluster at Ghent University.

An’s areas of expertise include: research & innovation management, technology transfer, project portfolio management, out-licensing, intellectual property, technology and business development.

An is co-founder and member of the management board of the CBI-cluster, “Chemistry to foster Biology Innovation” an inter-university initiative linking chemical expertise in Flanders (UA, KULeuven, UGent, UHasselt and VUB) with the biology community. She is also partner in the Business unit of Cancer Research Institute Ghent (CRIG).

ULTROXA® team Richard Hoogenboom

Prof. Dr. Richard Hoogenboom

Scientific Advisor

Richard Hoogenboom studied chemical engineering at the Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e; Netherlands). In 2005, he obtained his PhD under the supervision of Ulrich S. Schubert (TU/e) and continued working as project leader for the Dutch Polymer Institute; partly combined with a part-time position as Senior Product Developer at Dolphys Medical.

After postdoctoral training with Martin Möller at the RWTH Aachen (Humboldt fellowship; 2008) and Roeland J. M. Nolte at the Radboud University Nijmegen (NWO veni-grant; 2009), he was appointed as associate professor at Ghent University in 2010 and promoted to full professor in 2014.

His research interests include poly(2-oxazoline)s, stimuli-responsive polymers, and supramolecular materials, fields in which he is (co)inventor in more than 10 patent families and has co-authored over 300 scientific publications. He is currently associate editor for European Polymer Journal and Australian Journal of Chemistry.

ULTROXA® team Martin Purino

Dr. Martin Purino

Martin Purino studied Chemistry at the National University of San Luis (San Luis, Argentina). In 2013, he obtained his PhD in Chemistry and Chemical Engineering at the University of La Laguna (Tenerife, Spain), under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Víctor S. Martín García and Dr. Juan I. Padrón Peña. His main topic of research involved synthesis of heterocycles and mechanistic (DFT) studies of processes catalyzed by Fe(III) salts.

In 2013 he joined the Laboratory for Chemical Technology (LCT, Ghent University), working as a postdoctoral researcher in the area of molecular modelling and ab initio based kinetic modelling of acid catalyzed reactions under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Guy B. Marin and Prof. Dr. Marie-Françoise Reyniers.

After his postdoctoral training, in 2016 Dr. Purino joined the ULTROXA® spin-off project for contract development and manufacturing of poly(2-oxazoline)s and polyethyleneimines.

ULTROXA® team Ali Tigrine

MSc. Ali Tigrine

Ali Tigrine studied Chemistry at Ghent University (UGent; Belgium) and graduated in 2016. He completed his master thesis under the supervision of Prof. Richard Hoogenboom on the use of high molar mass poly(2-ethyl-2-oxazoline)s for drug formulation.

In 2016, after graduation, Ali joined the ULTROXA Team as a scientific researcher.

ULTROXA® team Maarten Vergaelen

MSc. Maarten Vergaelen

Maarten Vergaelen received his Master of Science in Chemistry at Ghent University in 2013. As an undergraduate student he performed his master thesis at the Supramolecular Chemistry Group (Prof. Richard Hoogenboom) on pH-responsive drug delivery systems using poly(2-oxazoline)-based micelles.

Maarten continued pursuing a PhD degree at the same group, with a focus on the development of defined high molar mass poly(2-oxazoline)s for applications in drug delivery systems. In 2015, Maarten received an invitation from chemical abstracts service (CAS) to join the Scifinder® Future leaders in Chemistry Program. Maarten has co-authored more than five scientific publications in the poly(2-oxazoline) field and is currently completing his PhD within the ULTROXA Team.

ULTROXA® team Joachim Van Guyse

MSc. Joachim Van Guyse

Joachim Van Guyse attained his Master of Science in Chemistry in 2014 at Ghent University (UGent; Belgium). He completed his Master’s dissertation at the Supramolecular Chemistry Group (Prof. Richard Hoogenboom), on the “Design of γ-Cyclodextrin Hosts for Supramolecular Complexation of Buckminsterfullerene”.

Following his master dissertation, he continued to pursue a PhD under Prof. Richard Hoogenboom, but switched his focus from supramolecular chemistry to polymer chemistry. His PhD work mainly focuses on the design and synthesis of functional poly(2-oxazolines), where he explores new synthetic strategies to extend the scope of poly(2-oxazoline) platform.

Besides pursuing a PhD, Joachim also joined the ULTROXA Team in 2016, taking an active role in the development and extension of the PAOx/POZ platform for commercial applications.
